Here's the thing, in the summer, we're often asked, “but what do you do the rest of the year?”. So glad you asked!
We don't roll up the sidewalks after Labour Day and roll them back out 24th of May. Many people who have a cottage keep them open year 'round. There's lots to do in Southampton during all of the seasons.
Let’s talk about winter. It's FABULOUS! Yes, it can get cold, but so can everywhere else. Yes, it can be cloudy but those clouds bring forth the snow, and with snow you can dig out your snowshoes or cross country skis and Bruce County is your oyster for outdoor adventure! There are groomed trails and not-so-groomed trails, right in town and within half an hour are two spectacular spots, at Sauble Beach and Hepworth, where you can pay a very nominal ($8 or $9), day rate and snowshoe or ski on spectacular forested trails. It’s truly magical. No equipment? No problem! Our friend, Janette at Thorncrest Outfitters, 3 doors up the street, will be happy to rent or sell you what you need. If you have your own snow sled, there are trails galore and we have parking for you and your trailer behind the Inn.
On your return to base at 173 High Street, you are within steps to numerous spots for a warm drink and fine dining.
What else? Walks on the beach are pretty amazing. Winter creates an entirely different landscape down at the beach. The big winds and waters of early winter often create ice sculptures of the rocks and low trees closest to the shoreline. If there isn’t, or hasn’t, been much snow, the driftwood makes for great pickings. Dress warmly and it’s an awesome walk.
Of course there is the shopping: 8 shops selling women’s clothing; Fun Ice Cream Parlour - Hot Chocolate Float, anyone?; Southampton Olive Oil Company; they're open all year. Also, the is our wonderful museum with many great exhibits about both the First Nation History on the Bruce Peninnsula and colonial history as well. The Southampton Arts Gallery is worth a visit as well.
More? They say a change is as good as a rest - come and cuddle up in one of our rooms. Netflix is on-line and we have the most comfortable beds you’ve ever slept in!
Come on up to Southampton — it's a beautiful drive from anywhere! We think you’ll be glad you did.
